Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocking Lake Eisenhower Park with rainbow trout

Winter fishing may be a thing in the north despite the ice, but few Texan anglers take a winter break from their beloved sport. On Tuesday, January 11, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department brought a little Christmas surprise to local fishermen.

Anglers who enjoy participating in the Texan tradition of reeling in delicious rainbow trout during the winter months can drop their lines in Harris County Pct. 1’s Lake Eisenhower Park.

According to PCT. 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis, the TPWD has added some 600 species and more will be in stock on February 16.

“We are grateful to Texas Parks and Wildlife for generously stocking the pond with rainbow trout,” said Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis. “People can practice the sport of fishing and then eat this fish which can only be found in this region during the winter.”

Carl Kittel, director of the rainbow trout program at TPWD, said the department’s rainbow trout winter program is nothing new and a favorite among anglers. in the line for over 40 years.

“TPWD stores catchable size fish during the winter months to create angling opportunities all over Texas,” Kittel said. “Rainbow trout love cold water, can be caught with a variety of baits and lures, and are great to bring home and eat.”

Eisenhower isn’t the only lake around the state to receive the gift of stockings. The Department of Parks and Wildlife plans to place about 352,563 rainbow trout in Texas from November through March 6, according to the agency.

Rainbow trout are unable to survive in Texas after winter, so anglers are encouraged to stick to their daily bag limit of five trout.

Some regulations are imposed on fishermen. There is no minimum length limit and one daily bag is considered to be five trout. TWPD also states that an angler fishing in a community fishing lake or from a dock, pier or pier in a Texas State Park cannot use more than two poles. at a time. Anglers will need to have a valid fishing license that includes a freshwater fishing endorsement. For fishermen under 17, it is not necessary to have a license. No license is required to fish in a Texas State Park.

Rainbow trout recipes are plentiful, and fishermen can feed a small family with their catch.

“We encourage experienced and novice anglers to come out this winter and have fun catching rainbow trout at Eisenhower Park,” said Commissioner Ellis. “And if you can’t go to Eisenhower, several Precinct One parks – some also supplied by TPWD – have lakes for year-round fishing.”
