Search continues for boater who drowned in Lake Lanier

Game wardens are back on Lake Lanier looking for an Atlanta man who drowned Saturday afternoon while boating. Witnesses told officials Kaiyan Ding, 29, fell overboard in open water between Holiday Marina and Van Pugh South.

Lt. Judd Smith of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division said game wardens searched all night.

“Standing timber underwater makes the search more difficult, but game wardens will be back on scene this morning at 8 a.m. to continue the search until all options have been exhausted,” says -he.

Crews use sonar to search the lake. The area where Ding disappeared reaches depths of 60 to 80 feet. Smith says heavy boat traffic and choppy conditions on Saturday further complicated their search efforts.

Emergency personnel first responded to the scene around 2 p.m. on June 18 after witnesses called 911. According to Lt. Smith, witnesses told rescuers that Ding had been missing for about 10 minutes before arriving. call the emergency number.

Hall County Fire and Rescue Marine Rescue Unit 1 conducted the initial search. They handed the scene over to the DNR once the rescue turned into a recovery operation.
