MINNEAPOLIS– Friends and family say Twin Cities celebrity chef Justin Sutherland was seriously injured in a boating accident over the holiday weekend.

According to a GoFundMe hosted by Beth Gillies, the incident happened on Sunday. Sutherland was on a boat with friends and served as captain, wearing a captain’s hat.

Gillies reports that the hat flew off while he was piloting the boat.

He tried to catch it, hit a wave and was knocked off the boat. He fell in the water near the engine, and the propeller did a number on his head and left arm. His arm is broken, but his grip remains strong and there does not appear to be any nerve damage. His jaw is badly broken, but doctors are optimistic that with several more surgeries he will be smiling in no time. In addition to his broken bones, he suffered many lacerations, but with the plastic surgery they will become a reminder of his survival story.

Sutherland is in the hospital and Gillies says he should be fine eventually.

“With a bit of time, he might be better than fine. He adds more character to the face we know and love, and the most important news, his beard is intact,” Gillies said.

However, Gillies says that at the time of the accident, Sutherland did not have health insurance.

Sutherland is home to a number of acclaimed restaurants, including St. Paul’s Handsome Hog.
