Dinkum Fishing Guide | Tech Raptor

In our Dinkum fishing guide, we will see how the fishing mechanisms work Dinkumsome tips and tricks to get you started and a guide to the types of fish in the game.

How does fishing work in Dinkum?

To start fishing Dinkum, you will need to get a fishing rod from John’s shop. This can be bought whether it’s at the tent or you’ve moved it to a permanent building. Then head to your nearest body of water, either the ocean or inland fresh water. Make sure you can see some fish before you start fishing, so choose a good spot where several of them are swimming around. As with catching creatures, be sure to clear the area of any predators before you begin, as you wouldn’t want your relaxing fishing session interrupted by an emu attack.

Aim the fishing rod in the direction of the fish you want to catch and try to approach the float as close as possible. The fish aren’t attracted to the rod and tend not to come towards you, so you’ll have to bring the bobber to them. How far you throw the fishing rod depends on how long you hold it, and while there’s no on-screen meter that shows how far it will go, you’ll get a good idea afterward repeated the process several times.

Now you’ve found a spot, cast the fishing rod, and brought the bobber close to a fish. When a fish takes the bait and nibbles the line, there are two different types of nibbles. There’s a light, quick nibble that you won’t be able to catch, and a more dramatic nibble where the bobber will disappear underwater. Once it disappears, you’ll want to press to bring the fish back.

When a fish struggles at the end of the line, let it struggle. If you try to bring them back while they are fighting you will break the line and lose the fish. Once he stops fighting, start winding him up again. You may need to repeat this process several times to properly tire the fish and finally get it out of the water.

Dinkum Fishing tips and tricks

  • Sharks do not count as fish and cannot be brought in with a fishing rod. If you want to catch one, you will have to fight it and kill it.
  • Those blue globes you see floating in the water are actually jellyfish. They also can’t be caught on the fishing line, but a good spear swipe kills them and they’ll drop jelly that you can use in cooking. Killing jellyfish counts towards your hunting level, not your fishing level.
  • If you see something in the water that moves very little or not at all, chances are it’s a creature, not a fish. You have to enter the water and dive to collect critters, the fishing rod will not work.
  • Fish cannot be speared. We tried.
  • Once you reach fishing level 5, you can upgrade your fishing license to show bubbles in the water where there are fish. Catching creatures underwater will also increase your fishing level, if you’re having trouble finding fish or using the fishing rod.

What can you do with fish in Dinkum?

There are a few options for things you can do with fish in Dinkum. Surprisingly, one of them does not cook, because there are currently no recipes that can use fish. However, once John has set up a permanent shop and visitors to the island begin to turn, Theodore accepts donations for his museum and will take in fish as well as bugs and creatures.

Fish can also be sold to John at different prices in his store, whether in the tent or in a permanent building. Also, it’s good to keep a few fish handy as they can be used in requests from other characters.
