Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Adds New Class of Boater Safety

CHEMUNG COUNTY (WETM) – The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office offers classes to make sure you’re safe while on the water.

The course will be limited to twenty-five participants. The course is available for children to attend at the age of ten on the date of the course. Other requirements in
in the near future, anyone operating a personal watercraft is expected to be licensed.

  • You can find your year of birth to see when the course is required:
  • Born after January 1, 1993, must take a safety course starting in 2020.
  • Born after January 1, 1988, must take a safety course starting in 2022.
  • Born after January 1, 1983, must take a safety course starting in 2023.
  • Born after January 1, 1978, must take a safety course starting in 2024.

The requirement would extend to all motor boat operators from 2025, regardless of their age.

There will be no charge to attend the class. The class will be held on Saturday June 12 at the Golden Glow Fire Department from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a thirty (30) minute lunch break for people to eat. All participants are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks. The fire department will provide hot dogs on the day of the course.

As a reminder, please keep in mind that class size will be limited to twenty-five (25) students on a first come, first served basis. You must be pre-registered to attend the course.
