Rescue teams scour Trinity Bay on Tuesday morning in search of an 88-year-old boater missing after a fishing expedition.

Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said the man entered the water at Smith’s Point in the southeastern part of the bay around 8:30 a.m. Monday. When he did not return that afternoon, his wife called the Coast Guard to report that he had never returned home. Crews from the Coast Guard, Chambers County Sheriff’s Office and several fire departments did what they could on Monday before storms moved into southeast Texas and hampered their efforts .

The man was driving a 16ft aluminum fishing boat with a bimini top. It was destined for the Anahuac Channel, about 15 miles north-northeast of where it launched.

Coast Guard and other agency crews resumed their search Tuesday morning, according to Coast Guard Sector Houston. Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, a Coast Guard helicopter was tracked on ABS-B Exchange flying in a grid pattern over Trinity Bay, apparently searching for the missing sailor.

The identity of the missing boater has not been made public, but he is familiar with the waters of Trinity Bay, Hawthorne said in a Facebook post.

“He knows the water very well and has spent most of his life fishing and shrimping in the Galveston/Trinity Bay complex,” Hawthorne wrote. “We have a lot of hope and pray that he has mechanical issues or has run aground and we will find him tomorrow morning.”

As of 9 a.m., crews were still searching, according to the Coast Guard.
